To veil or not to veil?

Trend alert! The traditional veil has made a comeback. This tradition has dated back centuries, and has a lot of symbolic connotations with different cultures and religions. Nowadays it’s more of a fashion accessory. More and more brides are opting to accessorize with a veil on their big day.

There are many ways to wear it. However, the easiest way is having your normal orna draped on your head and placing a sheer orna over the top to cover your face.

Your wedding invitation is the first impression of your wedding. In the past, guests were invited by word of mouth. The family of the bride/groom visited relatives homes in order to personally invite them. Bring on 2014, and things have changed a lot. There are new ways to communicate, through email or phone call but sending an invitation is the more acceptable way to invite guests.

The most important thing is that the invitation conveys the personalities of the bride and groom. It also sets the tone for the entire event, so it is important to try and create an invite that matches the style of the wedding.There are many ways an invitation can be customized to reflect the couple and the event. The size and stock of the invitation, ink colors, typefaces, monograms and other design elements can all be used. If you can't find something that truly represents you, there is always the option of having a custom designed invite.

I love doing my nails, and over the course of a week I change my manicure at least a few times. I'm surprised that nail art is not a big thing in Bangladesh yet. For each of my wedding events, I will have a different manicure. I am a perfectionist so I pay attention to the tiniest of details. I hope I can inspire you with a bit of red and gold bling for your nails. These are all quite simple ideas, and if anyone would like a tutorial please leave a comment. Holud

Bangladeshi Wedding Traditions: Gaye holud

The Gaye holud (pronounced guy hoolud) is an important pre wedding tradition at Bengali weddings. It is somewhat equivalent to a bridal shower. The term Gaye Holud translates roughly to body tumeric, It doesn't sound that great but it's one of the most enjoyable ceremonies.

There are traditionally two holuds, one for the bride and one for the groom. The bride and groom only attend their own holuds but their families attend both. Decor tends to focus on bright colours, specially the colours, yellow, orange and green as well as fresh flowers. There are usually a wide variety of Bengal sweets, fruit displays, fruit carvings and finger food.

The atmosphere is casual and fun. When the other family comes to the holud, the hosting family members line up and shower the guest family with flower petals, gifts and sweets. The guest family bring with them presents for the bride/groom whose holud they are attending. These gifts usually arrive in huge dalas or trays. They include gifts such as the brides/grooms wedding outfit, jewellery, cosmetics, sweets, and gifts for the brides family. Often fresh fish is also sent decorated like the bride and groom.

Tumeric is an antiseptic with healing properties. It also leaves skin with a glow. For the holud ceremony, fresh tumeric is made into a paste with some water or milk and applied to the bride/grooms face, arms and feet. It is believed to beautify the couple for their wedding day.

The bride/groom is then fed a Bengali sweet to add sweetness to their married life.

Lastly some people also wear mehendhi/henna on this day. After the holud is applied the bride has a shower and changes into her second outfit ready for the mehendhi. During the entire event, the family and friends of the couple perform skits and choreographed dance routines to entertain the bride and groom as well as the other guests.

Trend: Balloons in Pre Wedding Shoots

My favourite part of Shakib and Shishir's pre-wedding shoot would have to be the colorful balloons. For a while now I have noticed them all over wedding blogs. Balloons are bright, colorful and just a little bit quirky. They add a bit of fun and playfulness to a pre-wedding shoot. Personally I am a big fan of pastel jumbo balloons like the ones used by Chriselle from The Chriselle factor for her engagement shoot. What do you think about this trend?
